John Merrow provides a penetrating view into our very flawed education system. There is plenty of bashing going on in education right now, but here Merrow shows his affection for the beleaguered profession of teaching as he examines the weak points keeping teachers from being more effective. He looks at teacher evaluations, merit pay, tenure, retention and other key issues in the field with real insight.The only real weakness is that Merrow does not tap into the huge body of experience from the Information/Innovation Revolution and research outside of education over the past 30 years. This work provides a powerful perspective on the education field that does not inform Merrow's analysis. For example, motivation research nails the weaknesses of merit pay, insights into the artificial social nature of school deeply inform the analysis of bullying, the empowered team model can transform school organization and effectiveness, etc. But education lives in its own through-the-looking-glass world, and Merrow is certainly not alone in being unaware of these real-world perspectives. Maybe they are topics for the next book.
All in all, an excellent read.

John Merrow is THE source for in depth analysis of education in America. He helps us understand the
forces (hidden and apparent) that shape the learning environment for kids and teachers. This volume speaks volumes about his depth and breadth in understanding and communicating about teaching and leadersip.
Very good case examples as well as research. Thought great comparisons of different philosophies and methods. Eye opening with some of the stories.
An excellent explanation of the US educational system, the Influence of Teachers spells out in facts, figures and narratives why teachers are the most valuable asset we have and why they must be at the leaders of any general education reform. I read this book and then bought it for four teachers I know who will appreciate this confirmation of the crucial role they play in our children's lives and also John Merrow's recognition that they are among the most under-valued by our society.
My book club chose this book sight unseen as we're all public school teachers. We thought it would discuss the variety of impacts that teachers have on students. In fact, it's more about the overall problems with American education right now. It has chapters on teacher retention, merit pay, unions, charter schools, teacher evaluation, Michelle Rhee, and so on. For this reason we were disappointed.
The writing is clear, however, and the author makes valid points. With a different title we'd give it 5 stars.
I am a teacher and it's such hard work, trying daily to mentor and provide these young ones strategies to cope and learn. I am near retirement but wanted a different perspective from others and this was a good read. I have finished the book and have passed it on to another teacher friend to read. Mr. Merrow has reported for many years on teachers/teaching and I would recommend this book. Donna H
I am an undergraduate student pursuing teaching certification. I purchased this book as a summer read on education. I was really very satisfied. The book is less of an academic book, and more John Merrow sharing his views based on his own research and experiences reporting on education for many years. The book is quite interesting, and, though John shares his opinions, pretty balanced in terms of presenting evidence on both sides of each issue. The book also covers a very broad range of educational issues, from teacher merit pay to charter schools to Teach for America. The book was a great read for anyone working or interested in education.
